George Harrison as a young boy, growing up in the Welsh coal mining village of Varteg

My great great great grandfather George Harrison, who is as far back as we can go on the patriarchal line, was the miller of the scenic and remote village of Llanthony. Having lived there a while myself I can say the area attracts eccentrics and there are hints that he was one too.

My great-great-great-great grandmother Ann Morgan, wife of boat builder John Thomas, was of the village of Wonastow right on the cusp of Wales and England, and there she lived for 104 years, those good genes passing to my Welsh grandfather who also lived till over the age of 100.

George Harrison camping at Usk
It was in Dovercourt by the sea, far from the Welsh hills, that George chose to settle down, there falling in love with the beautiful red haired Eileen Spencer, ten years younger than him, whose family he lodged with.
